- <p> It's hard to imagine Johnny Depp, in all his tattooed, post-adolescent
- sullenness, as someone passionate for soigne sophistication.
- And yet with the opening of his new L.A. club, the Viper Room,
- Depp is committed to re-creating swank, 1930s night life. "No
- one is keeping the spirit of old Hollywood alive," he laments.
- "Today you go to clubs, you're invaded by music, you're at the
- mercy of bad taste." At Johnny's, guests can enjoy martinis
- and audible conversation in a dimly lit, Metallica-free space
- once home to the Melody Room, a Bugsy Siegel hangout. "I wanted
- to hold on to the historical value of the place," says Depp,
- "before it became a Laundromat."
